Environmental controls and smart-home technology can allow lights, thermostats, locks, and appliances to be operated by voice, switch, app, or automation, supporting greater independence. Safety technology such as alerts, sensors, and remote monitoring can also support aging in place.

Consider current and future needs, how different areas connect, maintenance and reliability of any technology, and the difference between simple assistive technology solutions and changes that require licensed construction, electrical, or plumbing work.
